Pop Imitates Art is a series of biographies of David Bowie, Mick Jagger, and Lou Reed. Pop Imitates Art is a play off of both the name “Pop Art” and the old question “Does life imitate art or does art imitate life?” The covers are designed to be fun, colourful and to pop off the page and illustrate the concept: pop culture is art.
The front of each book has a portrait in the style of Roy Lichtenstein’s Pop Art — Each face being made entirely of small dots. The use of Polaroid frames throughout as well as the repetition of images references Andy Warhol’s work. Each musician’s signature is brought in as a design element in the background.
